When family problems reach the workplace, someone pays the cost, often employers. Employers can make a difference in their business and in the lives of working parents by providing them with important information to keep their families healthy and drug-free.

Employers have a vested interest in helping their employees prevent family substance abuse. According to a survey conducted by the Hazelden Foundation, more than two-thirds of employees surveyed said that if a family member were struggling with drug or alcohol problems it would affect their ability to concentrate and be productive at work.
In a recent survey conducted for DrugFreeAZKids.org, eight out of 10 (78 percent) Arizona parents of preteens and teens want more information about how to prevent their child from using alcohol and drugs.
Getting this information at work can help employees and influencers keep their teens drug-free. Teens say that losing their parents' respect and pride is one of the main reasons they don't use drugs. And kids who learn about the risks of drug abuse from their parents are up to 50% less likely to use drugs than kids who do not.

Lunch & Learn Pilot Project
General Dynamics C4 Systems
A series of four workshops over four consecutive weeks was held for General Dynamics C4 Systems employees in the spring of 2011 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Each workshop included a PowerPoint presentation, discussion, handouts and suggested exercises to utilize at home.
Each workshop was at capacity with 20 attendees. A wait-list was generated for the over-flow at the Scottsdale location; and each of the four sessions included telephonic participants from General Dynamic’s worldwide locations.
At the conclusion of each Lunch and Learn workshop, employees were surveyed.
100% of respondents stated they would recommend the Lunch & Learn program to their
co-workers as well as to other companies. The survey found:
92% of the employees learned new skills
93% intended to talk with their children about the dangers of drinking and drug use
96% said they would take action after the Lunch & Learn – of those;
--88% said they would talk with their kids regularly about healthy ways to manage and reduce stress
--78% said they would be aware of the time they spent talking and listening to their kids
--78% said they would be on the look-out and take advantage of “teachable moments”
--53% said they would learn more about the different drugs kids are abusing
--44% said they would safeguard their prescription medications at home
